Community education and behaviour change

The WasteSorted Community Education Grants 2025-26 are an initiative of the Government of Western Australia (State Government) administered by the Waste Authority. They provide funding for community education and behaviour change projects that help to achieve the objectives and targets of Western Australias Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 (waste strategy).

You are strongly encouraged to align your project with the Waste Authority’s WasteSorted toolkit and GREAT Sorts messaging. Your application should detail how your project will maintain consistency with the principal statewide waste messages from the WasteSorted communications toolkit or the 'Be a GREAT Sort' behavior change campaign.

A maximum grant of $25,000 (excluding GST) is available per project.

Please take your time to read all questions (and hints) before starting your application. Complete each section, refer to the guidelines and allow yourself enough time to review the application before the due date.

For any queries about the guidelines, deadlines, or questions in the application form, please contact the WasteSorted Grants officer: wsg@dwer.wa.gov.au

Please allow at least 12 weeks from the closing date of applications to approval of funding.

SmartyGrants tips

Here’s what you need to know about SmartyGrants:

  • Save Regularly: There’s no auto-save, and it times out after 20 minutes. Click save progress every 10–15 minutes to avoid losing work.
  • Image Uploads: You can’t insert images directly—upload them in the designated sections.
  • Spell Check: SmartyGrants doesn’t have spell check, but most browsers like Chrome and Safari do. Check your settings to enable it.
  • SmartyFile Feature: You can use SmartyFile to pre-fill your organisation details and save time.

There is a SmartyGrants Help Guide for Applicants available for those who are new to the system (or would like a refresher!).

Conflict of interest

Before you continue:

A conflict of interest should be considered if an applicant has something to personally gain from an application being successful, or if members of the public could have grounds to perceive that the applicant could personally gain from a decision.

Do you have a real, potential or perceived conflict of interest to declare * Required
